** Not Guilty Plea Instructions

If you have been stopped for a vehicle or traffic offense in Essex County

  1. You have the right to challenge this matter in Court. To do so, you must contact the Court by the date set forth on the ticket(s) and request a bench trial. There, you or your attorney will have the opportunity to challenge the ticket(s) with the Court.
  2. You have the right to plead "guilty" by mail. See the instructions on your ticket. However, if you are applying for either the Diversion Program or the Traffic Reduction Program, you must sign Section B of your ticket (Not Guilty Section) and mail the original ticket to the courts. Please make sure to keep a copy for your records.
  3. You have the right to seek a reduction to your ticket(s) from the Essex County District Attorney's Office. You may be eligible to participate in the Essex County Traffic Diversion Program or the Essex County Traffic Reduction Program.

Traffic Diversion or Reduction Program Instructions

Review both programs and select an option that best suits you to get started. There is a Help Desk to call for assistance in navigating the Diversion process. If you apply, are accepted, and complete the Diversion program, your tickets will be withdrawn. If you apply for the Reduction program, you will receive a plea offer. You can complete both options without having to appear in court.
